Vernelle Richter

September 26, 1935 — November 21, 2017

Vernelle Jean Richter, 82, of Waco passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 27, 2017 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Waco Memorial Park, interment will follow.

Vernelle – known as “Oma” to her grandchildren and those who knew her best – was born September 26, 1935 to Lydia Ida & Harry William Ullrich. A life-long Waco resident, she graduated from Waco High in 1953 and attended nursing school through Hillcrest Hospital Nursing School. She married Harlan Robert Richter on June 5, 1954. Vernelle was actively involved with the PTA and the Camp Fire organization while her children were in school. With a love for the outdoors, she continued her involvement with Camp Fire for many years, assisting with camping trips and the summer camps held at Camp Val Verde. She also volunteered with the Citizens on Patrol program, associated with the Waco Police Department, and was a volunteer Ombudsman through the Area Agency on Aging of Heart of Texas as an advocate protecting patient/resident rights in local nursing homes. Vernelle’s gregarious nature made her a presence in every room and her company will surely be missed.

Vernelle was preceded in death by her parents and son Clayton Richter.

She is survived by her husband, Harlan; children, Kellis Richter, Felica Cervenka and husband Robert, Coyia Richter and Russell Richter; sister Kay Wells and husband Doyle; grandchildren, Danielle Leathers and husband, Justin, Matthew Richter, River Richter and wife, Jade, Hannah Kubacak and husband, Collin and Rachel Roquemore; great-grandchildren, Leah Grace Leathers, Ella Chase Leathers and River Kai Richter.
