Sophia V. Rivera

Dec 24, 1941 — Jul 3, 2026

Waco

Sophia V. Rivera, born on December 24, 1941, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, in Waco, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. Throughout her 84 years, Sophia lived a life richly woven with cherished memories, steadfast faith, and an unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Sophia was the beloved daughter of Juanita Verdes Villarreal and Antonio Villarreal, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in passing by her sisters Mary V. Rivera, Margaret Villarreal, Matilda Villarreal, and Rosie Villarreal, as well as her brother Pete Villarreal. Though her family experienced loss, Sophia’s life was defined by the deep connections she maintained with her loved ones.

She leaves behind a legacy of generations; her devoted children, Alicia Lopez, Larry Rivera, Becky Duron, Joe Rivera, Melissa Deleon, and Marie Rivera, as well as her sons-in-law Tony Duron and Leon DeLeon; 23 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, and 49 great great-grandchildren. Sophia’s affection for her family extended to all, including her dog Bella, who held a special place in her heart.

Sophia’s story began in a humble setting, working alongside her father and siblings in the cotton fields as a young girl. She often recalled those formative days, sharing fond memories of being paid just ten cents for a week’s work, depending on how much cotton she picked. With these hard-earned coins, Sophia and her siblings would relish simple joys—heading to town for movie tickets and candy, moments that delighted her.

One of Sophia’s favorite memories involved picking tomatoes with salt in hand alongside her step-sister. Their secretive snacking would come to an end only when they were finally caught by her step-father—a story she would recount fondly to her family. Never one to shy away from adventure, Sophia also played baseball on a ladies' team in South Waco. Sophia also spent many of her later years working for Waco ISD, spreading love and joy to those around her.

Family was the very heart of Sophia’s world. She delighted in spending time with her loved ones and found joy in even the simplest acts—be it sewing curtains for her home, coloring, or working word puzzles. Her home was a gathering place, always brightened by her big heart and lively presence. Sophia had a special knack for making everyone, both family and pets alike, feel loved and welcomed.

At Sophia’s core was a deep and abiding faith. She loved worshiping God, her Lord and Savior, and her faith was a pillar in her life—a source of strength and solace that never faltered.

Those whose lives she touched will gather to honor Sophia’s legacy with a visitation to take place on July 20, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Waco Memorial Funeral Home, 6623 Interstate 35 S, Robinson, TX 76706. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Committal Service at Waco Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to a reception at Waco Memorial Funeral Home in the Event Center following services.

Sophia V. Rivera’s life was a testament to resilience, kindness, and unyielding love for family and faith. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide those she leaves behind, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Pallbearers will be Alex Duron, Tony Duron, Jordan Olvera, Marshall Vincent Pena, Joe Rivera, Jr., Larry Rivera, III, Cody Ryberg, and Alex Vega.
