A beloved wife, wonderful mother, loving grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothy Mae Feller Stubbs, 90, of Waco, Texas, left this life on September 30, 2024, to spend eternity in heaven.
Dorothy was born in Marlin, Texas, on January 3, 1934, to Alfred David and Linda Adeline (Stein) Feller, who owned the Marlin Flower Shop for many years. She was christened on April 15, 1934, and confirmed on May 25, 1947, at St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Marlin. Church life, devotion to family and friends, and demonstrating Christ’s love by loving others have been at the core of Dorothy’s life.
Dorothy attended public school, graduating from Marlin High School on May 30, 1951, and never missed a day of education during high school. She excelled at bookkeeping, shorthand, art, and music, playing clarinet through her senior year. She went on to study at Durham Business College in Austin after graduation, living with local clergy and caring for the family’s children during her time there. Dorothy later returned to Waco, starting work as a stenographer at the downtown offices of Texas Farm Bureau in 1952. Dorothy survived the 1953 Waco tornado and can be seen in photographs of the devastated downtown area. After that event, she was always aware of any storm headed her way.
Dorothy met the love of her life, E.T. (Emil Tyson) Stubbs, in 1959 while both worked for Texas Farm Bureau. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married at Austin Avenue Methodist Church in Waco on October 14, 1960, with her brother Arnold Feller officiating. E.T. and Dorothy made their home in Robinson, attending Robinson Drive United Methodist Church for many years. While E.T. continued to work with Texas Farm Bureau, Dorothy left in 1962. She worked as a clerical assistant for several doctor’s offices in the Waco area for many years, most notably Dr. Edward Lee. In 1981, they moved to Giddings, Texas, where Dorothy contributed to the community and built many close friendships through the local Study Club and the missions work of the Mary Martha Circle of the Giddings United Methodist Church. While in Giddings, Dorothy supported and served alongside E.T. in the Noon Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce, enjoying many local community activities. Upon retirement, E.T. and Dorothy returned to the Waco area in 2001 and made their home at Woodway United Methodist Church.
Dorothy was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time outside, whether in her gardens growing vegetables and roses or visiting on the back porch. She was equally skilled in the kitchen, and her family and friends enjoyed fresh vegetables, especially dill pickles, homemade jellies, and a variety of sweet and savory dishes rooted in her German heritage and her love for serving others. Family movie night with the 8mm reel-to-reel films often included homemade pizza. Dorothy loved entertaining family and friends and often joined in a rousing game of Wahoo, Farkle, Nertz, or Dominos. She shared her artistic side through painting, cross-stitch, and crafts, as well as a lifelong love of music. Dorothy always looked forward to serving as a sponsor during the week-long camp at the TX Farm Bureau Citizenship Seminar for high school students and did so for many years.
Dorothy and E.T. couldn’t wait to start their own family; their children meant the world to them. Those left to cherish her memories include Terri (Stubbs) and Johnny Taylor of Waco, Jeffrey and Danna Stubbs of Lorena, Barry and Wendy Stubbs of Huntsville, and Linda Stubbs of Waco. Grandchildren include Christopher Stubbs and Megan Davis of Waco, Deanna (Stubbs) and Scott Ivy of Belton, Jessica (Taylor) and Jason Sykora of Houston, Tyson and Whitney Taylor of Hewitt, Dylan Stubbs and Marie Reinke of Flower Mound, and Morgan Stubbs of Huntsville. Great-grandchildren include Emerson and Adley Sykora, Liam Stubbs, Harrison and Hannah Ivy, Payton and Parker Taylor, and Lyric Merkledove.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her soulmate of 43 years, E. T. Stubbs, her parents, David and Linda Feller, and brothers Reinhold, Arnold, Marvin, and David Feller. She is survived by her only sister, Doris Parton of San Antonio, brother-in-law James and Barbara Stubbs of West Columbia, and sisters-in-law Betty Feller of Mulberry, AR, Velvia Halsey of Leander, and Margarite Feller of San Antonio. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were dearly loved and appreciated.
