Major Bernardo “Ben” Ramirez, U.S. Army (ret) of Hewitt, TX passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on October 13, 2025 at Providence Hospital in Waco, TX. Family and friends are invited to attend services. The Rosary and visitation will be on Thursday October 23rd 6:00 pm-8:00 pm with Rosary starting at 6:00 pm. Funeral services will be on Friday, October 24th at 1:00 pm, both at Waco Memorial Funeral Home.
Bernardo Ramirez was born on August 20, 1942 in Marlin, TX to N.C. and Rosa Ramirez. He was married to Geneva Ramirez for 54 years. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1991 achieving the rank of Major. His military career took him to various parts of the world including two tours in South Korea and Vietnam. Two tours in Germany, Saudi Arabia, Desert Storm, Puerto Rico and other bases in the U.S. He earned numerous commendations for his bravery and leadership to include the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His commitment to his country was unwavering and he was an inspiration to all who knew him. Following his distinguished military service, Bernardo continued to serve his community as a School Director at Durham Business College in El Paso, TX from 1991-1993. He then became a counselor for the Texas Veterans Commission in Waco, TX for 20 years from 1995– 2016. Known for his dedication assisting fellow Veterans. He trained the majority of those that remain in Waco working for the agency. He was loved by those he worked with. Ben also received a degree in Business from McLennan Community College.
Ben liked Military History, traveling throughout Europe when stationed overseas, camping around Bavaria Germany and Venice Italy, always taking his family to historical places. He enjoyed reading books on military history, German beer, grilling outback, easy listening music, red cars especially his Camaros, watching wrestling and was a Dallas Cowboys fan. Relaxing outside with his dogs was something he did quite often. Most of all he had a deep love for helping others especially Veterans.
Bernardo was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Ramirez, his parents, N. C. and Rosa Ramirez and brother, Raymond Ramirez. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara and Tammy; sons, Bernardo “Ben” Jr., and Mitchell; his brothers, Eddie and Henry Ramirez; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ben will always be remembered for his generous kind heart and wonderful spirit.
The family is very thankful for the assistance by Providence Hospital, Ridgecrest Health Care in Waco, TX, and Willow Park Nursing Home in Clifton, TX.
Bernardo “Ben” Ramirez, husband, father and friend will surely be missed by all.
