Walker A. Lea Jr.July 31, 1924 ~ June 8, 2010 Dr. Walker A. Lea Jr., expired on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 14, 2010 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors. Dr. Lea, born July 31, 1924 in Port Arthur, Texas, was the son of Alice Townsend Lea and Walker A. Lea, Sr. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Baylor University and Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a residency in Dermatology at The University of Michigan and became a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Lea served his country in World War II as a member of the Army of the United States Medical Department where he received campaign medals with two bronze stars for his participation in the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of Northern France. Active in many medical organizations over the years, Dr. Lea had served as President of the McLennan County Medical Society, the 12th District Medical Society and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Medical Association for several years. He served as a Trustee of Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, Texas, for 21 years. He was a former chairman of Waco Scottish Rite Learning Center for Children. During his career, Dr. Lea received several academic awards: Alpha Omega Alpha, Baylor Medical College; Sigma Chi and Phi Sigma, University of Michigan and The Taub International Award for Research, Baylor College of Medicine. A devoted Baylor Alumnus, Dr. Lea worked actively for many years in the Baylor Alumni Association. He was a Past President of the Baylor Alumni Association, and a recipient of the W.R. White Metorious Service Award. In recognition of his professional achievement, participation in alumni affairs and service to his alma mater, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 1987. Through the years, Dr. Lea was active in many civic, church and genealogical organizations. He was a Life Member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Jamestowne Society, a Hereditary member of the Society of Magna Charta Barons, and a member of the Society of Americans of Royal Descent. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for many years and had served as chairman of the Board of Deacons, as well as a member of the Bench of Elders. He had served his Presbytery and Synod and was a Commissioner of the General Assembly in 1978 and 1980. He was active in many Masonic activities. He was a member of Waco Lodge #92, Ruthvan Commandry #2, Red Cross of Constantine, the Royal Order of Scotland and a Thirty-third Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was awarded the Stephen F. Austin Award for distinguished community service by the Waco Scottish Rite Bodies in November 2004. Dr. Lea was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Beverly Hayes Lea, and his sister Jean Lea. He is survived by daughter, Kristen Lea Gegenheimer and her husband, David, of New Orleans, LA; sons, Dr. Scott Lea and wife, Pat, of Pearland, Texas, and Walker Lea III and wife, Ann, of Dawson, Texas; six grandchildren, James Gegenheimer, Melissa Lea Harris, Kathryn Lea, Scott T. Lea, Walker A. Lea IV, Allen Lea; and one great grandson, Luke Harris. Pallbearers will be Fred Logan, Dr. Bing Oei, James Gegenheimer, Scott T. Lea, Walker A. Lea IV and James Allen Lea. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Farley Verner, Dr. James Cole, Rev. Roy Sherrod, Harry Jeanes, Alton Pearson and Walter L. Johnston.
