Graveside services for Major Roger I. Thomas, 94, of Temple will be at Waco Memorial Park in Waco, TX on Friday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m., with son, Ed Thomas, officiating. Maj. Thomas died on March 23, 2015 at William R. Courtney Veterans Home in Temple.He was born on June, 21, 1920 to Roy and Cora Thomas in Purcell, Oklahoma. The family moved to Muleshoe, Texas, and he graduated from Muleshoe High School.After joining the Army Air Corps, Maj. Thomas served his country proudly in World War II as a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot. On his final mission, his plane was shot down behind enemy lines, and he, and the other crew members parachuted and survived for two months, until rescued by the French underground. Through his service to his country, Maj. Thomas was awarded the Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Reserve Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal. Senior Pilot Wings, along with other battle stars.On March 10, 1945, he wed Charlie Opaline Reece in San Antonio, Texas. His beloved Charlie preceded Roger in death in 2002. He and Charlie settled in Robinson, Texas and raised their two sons Roger and Ed. Following retirement from the Air Force, Maj. Thomas owned and operated a business in Waco, Texas. Maj. Thomas was also preceded in death by three younger sisters, Theresa Freeman, Barbara Wilson, and Janie McDaniel. He is survived by his two sons, Roger W. Thomas, and wife Sylvia of Houston, Texas, and Ed Thomas, and wife Dana of Temple, Texas, grandchildren, Sean Thomas and wife Deena, of Houston, Kacie Avery and husband Jason of Temple, Katie Williams and husband Jason of Temple, along with 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Clarence Thomas, James Leroy Thomas, EJ Thomas, and Carl Thomas. Visitation will be held at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors at 4400 West Waco Dr. in Waco, TX, on Thursday, March 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
