Robert Eugene Macy, 89, of Robinson passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026.
He was born on April 30, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa (Polk County).
Robert proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1966 and later in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1974. During his time in the Navy, while aboard the USS Lake Champlain, the ship’s mission included recovering astronauts from the Gemini series of space capsules.
In 1984, Robert earned a Bachelor’s degree from Tarleton State University, becoming the first in his immediate family to earn a college degree. After completing his education, he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Temple, Texas, as a Vocational Rehabilitation Therapy Technician. In this role, he helped fellow veterans coping with PTSD, schizophrenia, alcoholism, and other personality disorders. He retired from the VA in 1994.
In 2000, Robert began working as a substitute teacher at Midway ISD in Hewitt, Texas, where he served for the next 20 years. He was beloved by high school students, often sharing stories from his military service. For his 85th birthday, he was honored with a surprise celebration at the school and featured in a newspaper article. He was frequently recognized in public by former students whose lives he had touched.
Robert was the son of Robert Louis Macy and Lillian Celesta Macy. He married Marjorie Schmehl in 1966.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amanda Lea Pool; siblings Mary (Louie) Heggen, Sally (Tony) Dellaca, Irene (Otis) Shives, and Richard Macy.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Schmehl) Macy; his sister, Carol Churchill; and his daughters, Sherilyn Kaye Fair, Deborah (David) Jean Pool, and Celesta (Kevin) Jean Martin.
Robert is also survived by his grandchildren: Jarrod Bradley, Jason Jenkins, Jonathan Downer, Joannes Pool, Dana Pool, and Corey Martin; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, many friends and neighbors over the years
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Waco Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow, also at Waco Memorial Funeral Home.
