Obituary

Moses Villarrial, born December 28, 1932 in Gatesville, Texas but was raised in Oglesby, Texas passed away peacefully Friday, October 7, 2022. Visitation and Celebration of Life will be at 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Connally/Compton Funeral Home.

Moses worked as a brick mason for over 50 years leaving thousands of residential houses and commercial buildings in and around Waco as a remembrance of his incredible work. He was the first Mexican-American to graduate from Oglesby High School where he excelled as a pitcher for the baseball team. He started pitching for the high school while he was still in 8th grade. He was named Athlete of the Year while at Oglesby High School. Upon graduation from high school, he was drafted into the Army where he tried out for and made the All-Army Baseball team as a shortstop. As a member of the baseball team, he traveled all across Europe and into communist controlled Berlin, Germany. When he was later transferred to Panama, he again toured the Caribbean playing baseball. He was also an incredible musician, vocalist and song writer that played in bands his entire life including El Conjunto Villarrial. With El Conjunto Villarrial, he appeared on national TV on the Johnny Canales Show many, many times. He was especially proud when his band gained a statewide sponsorship with Coors Brewing Company. An accomplished accordion player, he was responsible for teaching many of the current accordion players in and around Waco, Texas. He was inducted into the Music Association of Central Texas Hall of Fame and delighted in the fact that his picture hung next to Willie Nelson's photo. He adored his family and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren excel in school, sports, and music. He was a die-hard fan of the Baylor Bears, Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers.

Moses was preceded in death by his wife, Suzie Villarrial, parents, Jesus and Cruz Villarrial and four brothers, Ernest Villarreal, Sr., Lolo Villarrial, Louis Villarrial and Mike Villarreal, Sr.
