Mary Nell Durie Taylor SoRelle passed away at 90 years of age on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at her home in San Antonio, Texas with family at her side.Mary Nell was born in Waco on November 4, 1924, the daughter of Roy Durie and Edith Wilhelmina Kleypas Durie of Waco, Texas. She had one sister, Nancy Durie Duncan. She attended Sacred Heart Academy, Waco, Texas, where she was President of her senior class and received her high school diploma in 1941. She attended Our Lady of Victory Junior College in Ft. Worth, where she was President of her senior class, and then transferred to Baylor University in 1943, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and English in 1945. While attending Baylor, she was a member and President of the University Urbanites. She attended the first Camp Fire Girls camp in Belton, followed by Wakitatina in Valley Mills, Tonkawa in Crawford, and directed Wanica Camp Fire Camp in Corsicana. Mary Nell was the daughter of an avid horseman (Roy Durie) and learned to ride early in life and barrel race; later she would haul her kids to horseshows to compete in quarter horse pleasure classes. She taught third grade at La Vega in Bellmead and married William Harold Taylor, Jr., of Marshall, Texas on August, 24, 1946. They had four children and she became a homemaker. That, along with being involved with her children and their activities, brought her the most joy. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, decorating her home, and any activities involving her children, typically driving their teams to various sports activities. She was "team mom" before this term was even used. She often packed up band equipment, and baseball, volleyball, soccer, and rugby team members and headed wherever the tournaments required. Over the course of her life, Mary Nell had moving down to a science, as she moved 14 times, including a three year adventure in Brussels, Belgium when her husband's job required transfer. Upon returning to Texas, Mary Nell was very active in the Al-Anon Family Groups, serving as Alateen sponsor, delegate for Texas-West and represented the area at three World Service Conferences in New York City.On November 28, 1987, she married her second husband, Jack Martin SoRelle, of Waco, Texas. She became active in the Waco community, serving as an associate at Baylor's Strecker Museum and as a member of Waco League of Women Voters, volunteering for the Waco One Thousand elementary school reading initiative, serving on Camp Fire's Teen Leadership Waco Advisory Board, and was active in Sons of Norway serving on the welcoming committee. She also took joy in all of her grandchildren and step-grandchildren.Mary Nell and Jack enjoyed traveling the United States which took them coast to coast to such places as Kentucky to visit the horse farms, the fall festival in Maine, visiting the beaches of Hawaii, and one trip retracing the expedition of Lewis and Clarke. But their favorite trips were criss-crossing Texas by car, picnicking along the way. Mary Nell kept a large Texas map with pushpins in all the Texas towns they visited. After his death, in July, 2010, Mary Nell made her last move to San Antonio to live near her daughter 's family, and enjoyed decorating her home, trying new recipes, gardening, reading, seeing her grandchildren, making new friends and staying in touch with longtime ones. As she once said, "I always make a place my home no matter where I am." She brought her love of the Baylor Bears (especially the Lady Bears) and Texas Rangers with her to San Antonio, but soon developed an equal affinity for the San Antonio Spurs. She knew as much as any sports announcer about coaches, players, and stories behind the scenes of her favorite teams. Her sister Nancy always made sure Mary Nell was aware of the latest news and sports schedules.Mary Nell enjoyed the annual Kleypas family reunion at Ft. Parker in Mejia, Texas, where she was the oldest family member in age, but the youngest at heart. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Durie Duncan of Willow Park, Texas; four children, William Harold "Bill" Taylor, III of Austin, Texas, Roy Durie Taylor of Springfield, Missouri, Sally Edith Taylor, MD, of San Antonio, Texas and Daniel Blakeley Taylor, of Austin, Texas; son-in-law Jeffrey McNeff; daughter-in-law Tyla Graves; grandchildren, Genevieve and Henry Faulkner, Mary and Gary Bone, Chelsea Taylor, Megan and David Cranmer, Abigail Taylor, Katie McNeff Vela and Raul Vela IV, and Andy McNeff; eight step-grandchildren, Mallory SoRelle, Jeff SoRelle, Laura Downes, Brad SoRelle, Elliott SoRelle, Josh Downes, Courtney SoRelle and Abby SoRelle; and three great-grandchildren, Waylon Faulkner, Claire Bone and Olivia Cranmer.She made friends easily and will be missed by many, including her neighbors in San Antonio who kept watchful eye over her and checked on her if she missed an evening out on her front porch enjoying the sun and reading. She is also survived by many close friends including Mary Gerecke of Waco, Dorothy Ellen Hoban of Corpus Christi, and Laura Jane Ruby of Tyler along with her loving cousins including Linda and Joe Gough and Jerry and Mary Herring of Waco, Kay Herring and Eric Peterson of Marble Falls, and Alan and Betty Miller, of Irving, Texas, and many nieces and nephews. She appreciated the help and support she received in San Antonio from Danielle Cordani, Saam Miremadi, Raul III, Vickie and Jennie Vela, and the Helping Our Seniors staff, especially Alma Morado, Lena Perez and Vicky Guajardo.A memorial service will be held graveside Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, 2124 Fifth Street, Waco, Texas, officiated by Mary Nell's grandson, Henry Faulkner of New Jersey.
