Mary George BeckhamOctober 22, 1917~ April 5, 2008 Mary George, 90, of McGregor, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2008. Services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with the Dr. Tom Bedicheck officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, April 7, at the funeral home. Mary George was born on October 22, 1917, the only child of Minnie Clara Nix and Robert David Turner, in a log cabin in Kaufman County. Her childhood cabin was eventually incorporated into a home. Mary George began her education at the Demonstration School on the campus of Abilene Christian College and graduated from Wills Point High School. She attended Abilene Christian College and graduated from Texas State College for Women in Denton. While teaching in Mart, Mary George met and married John William (Bill) Beckham, a graduate of Baylor University. They relocated in McGregor where Mary George taught at the high school and Bill was an accountant for the Bluebonnet Ordinance Plant. They later moved to Haskell, and then to Waco where Mary George taught History and Homemaking at Lake Air Junior High School and Bill was employed at the Waco Tribune Herald. Mary George is a charter member of Eta Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators. As an active member of Historic Waco Foundation, she served as a docent at McCulloch House. Mary George's talents with textiles and interest in history added considerable appeal to the tours she guided. She has been an active member of Columbus Avenue Church of Christ for 58 years, where she touched many lives in her Sunday school classes for children and ladies. Her days have been filled with her passions ~ sewing, quilting, and gardening. She has shared her talents and expertise by teaching and by creating treasured heirlooms for friends and relatives. Her home is surrounded by beautiful flowers and reflects the joy she brings to others. Preceding Mary in death were her parents; and husband, Bill Beckham. Those left behind to cherish her memory are daughter, Linda Beckham of McGregor; son, David Beckham of Cedar Park; granddaughters, Sarah and Emily Beckham and Shannon and husband, Daryl MaGill, all of Round Rock; and great-grandson, Michael MaGill of Round Rock.
