Lula Lee LeubeLula Lee Leube, 95, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at a local nursing home. A visitation for family, loved ones and friends will be at 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2004 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. in Moody Cemetery. Lula Lee Sebastian Leube, twelfth child of Lula Lee (Cormany) and William Henry Sebastian of Moody, was born July 12, 1908. She attended public school in Moody and then moved to Waco to study voice and piano, living with her sister Ina Mae Staton. She went to New York City and studied at the Julliard School of Music before becoming a singer with orchestra and band programs on CBS radio. She met and married R. Paul Leube, a New Yorker who had played baseball at Columbia Univ., catching for their star pitcher, Lou Gherig. This friendship of his with Gherig, her beauty and singing popularity allowed them free run of the best speakeasies of Prohibition New York for a year before they moved to Scarsdale. During World War II, Lou joined the Red Cross Motor Corps as an ambulance driver and served for 20 years as recruitment chairman for National Red Cross. Lou was a lifetime member of Scarsdale Baptist Church and Scarsdale Woman's Club. In Waco she belonged to the Garden Forum Garden Club, the Elizabeth Gordon Bradley Chapter of the DAR, Daughters of Republic of Texas, and Daughter's of Confederate Veterans. She was instrumental in having Washington's Headquarters in White Plains put on the National Registry of Historic Places, and served as its chairman for many years before moving back to Waco following the death of her husband.Lou was predeceased by her parents, and eleven brothers and sisters, many of whom are buried at Moody Cemetery. She is survived and mourned by her niece and best friend, Lena Lue Dean Staton of Waco; the Staton children and grandchildren; nephews Michael H., Clayton, Don, and A.J. Sebastian; and grand nieces and grand nephews and their children, too many to enumerate, but whom she loved equally. She is also mourned by her friend Lucille Thomas and neighbor and friend Nancy Vordokas.In lieu of flowers Lou would like a donation to Moody Baptist Church or the charity of one's choice.
