Karon Nell Blackburn Phelps, 76, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on the morning of September 26, 2026, following a courageous 10-year battle with cancer.
Karon was born in Waco, Texas, on December 11, 1949, alongside her twin sister, Sharon. She grew up in Waco and graduated from Midway High School in 1968.
Karon spent many years working in accounting for Mrs. Baird’s Bread, where she remained until the company relocated its operations. She later continued her career in accounting at Spenco Medical before retiring in 2015.
Karon was a devoted mother, and her son, John Surley, was the light of her life. Family meant so much to Karon, and she treasured the time she spent with those she loved. She also enjoyed going to yard sales and especially enjoyed shopping for antiques.
Karon was preceded in death by her parents, Shirley and John Blackburn; her brother, John Blackburn Jr.; her husband, Jack Phelps; her niece, Tamara Romano; and her brother-in-law, Michael Romano.
She is survived by her beloved son, John Surley and his wife, Lisa, of Waco; her granddaughters, Karron Chapman (Paul), Megan Stanley (Gavin), and Allison Rynearson (Bobby); her great-grandchildren, Braden Chapman, Nova Stanley, Repp Rynearson, and Bennett Rynearson; her twin sister, Sharon Romano; and her nieces, Nicole Oates (David), Christi Tharpe (Kelly), and Gina Jones (Greg), all of Waco. She also leaves behind extended family and many dear friends who will cherish her memory.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Carl Chakmakjian and the staff at Texas Oncology for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided Karon throughout her many years of treatment.
A graveside service will be held at Waco Memorial Park on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
