Johnny Ray Moon, a cherished member of the Waco community and a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on June 9, 2026, in Waco, Texas. Born on August 31, 1936, in Waco, Johnny’s life was a testament to steadfast dedication, warmth, and an enduring spirit that touched many lives.

Johnny grew up attending schools in East Waco, balancing his education with a commitment to serve his country. In October 1954, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, dedicating four years to military service. His time in the service not only shaped his character but also allowed him to complete his 12th-grade education while serving. 

Following his military service, Johnny embarked on a meaningful career at General Motors, where he worked on assembly lines and contributed to the General Store. He will be remembered as a dependable worker who approached his tasks with dedication. Yet, beyond his work ethic, Johnny was known for his approachable nature and his genuine willingness to help others—a true friend to all who knew him.

Johnny’s personality shone brightly through his love of storytelling, especially tales about the 1953 Waco Tornado, a story he recounted with vivid detail. Friends and family delighted in his happy demeanor and his playful jokester spirit that could lighten any room. His laughter and tales will be deeply missed.

An avid traveler, Johnny enjoyed exploring the United States in his 5th wheel, and he treasured cruising the Caribbean alongside his beloved wife, Barbara. It is no secret among those close to him that he may have even indulged a bit in gambling.

Johnny’s greatest joy came from his family. He was the beloved husband of 36 years to Barbara Moon, whom he met through his sister and married on April 7, 1990. His loving family extended to his sons, Johnny Ray Moon, Jr., and Rodney Moon; his sisters, Barbara Lou Butler and Susie Woodward; his brother, James Moon; and his sister-in-law, Peggy Moon. Johnny was also a proud grandfather to Christopher Blake Lobban, and a great-grandfather to Aiden Delbosque, Evee Delbosque, Skyleigh Lobban and Christopher Lobban. Each family member was a source of immense pride and joy for Johnny, and his enduring legacy lives on in their hearts.

We will gather to honor Johnny’s memory on June 15, 2026, at Waco Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., offering all who knew him a chance to pay their respects and celebrate a life well lived.
