James C. ButlerMay 6, 1926 ~ March 9, 2007 James C. Butler, 80, of Spring Valley, passed away early on Friday, March 9, 2007 at a Temple hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, March 12, at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Jim Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with family and friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 at the funeral home. James was born the son of Clem Bazil and Susan Fronie Hargrove Butler on May 6, 1926 in Eddy, TX. At 17 James joined the U.S. Navy and sailed on the U.S.S. Mendicino, serving in Okinawa during the invasion. From the age of 19 up until 61 James worked for (Universal Atlas) LeHigh Portland Cement Co., retiring in 1987. He enjoyed "cutting up with" and playing pranks on fellow co-workers, as well as playing 42 and dominoes with them on lunch breaks. On Oct. 8, 1950 he married his sweetheart, Jo Nell Todd. James & Jo Nell were the first members of First Baptist Church Woodway after the charter closed. His strong Christian leadership was evidenced by his serving as a deacon and also Sunday school teacher of young boys. In his free time, how James loved to hunt, fish, garden, farm and spend time with his grandsons! Preceding James in death were his parents; wife, Jo Nell on April 28, 2000; infant twin brother, Charles B. Butler; another brother, Eugene Butler; and sister, Edna Gan. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his son, James Bryan Butler & wife Amy of Bossier City, LA; daughters, Janet Elaine Broach & husband Bill of Lorena, TX and Beverly Butler Burch & husband Jeff of Bedford, TX; brother, Tilmon Butler & wife Merle of Lorena, TX; sisters, Grenita Crigger & husband Bob and Zerline Scott & husband Doug, all of Temple, TX; and grandsons Seth, Colin & Clayton Broach and Alex & Jacob Butler.
