Gilbert Montemayor, 76, of Waco, TX passed away Monday, March 4, 2024, under Hospice care at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Waco. He was born on April 20, 1947, to parents Hector Montemayor, and Louisa (Davila) Montemayor.

Gilbert graduated from Waco High School in 1965. Furthering his love of education, he attended Hill College in Hillsboro, TX proceeding to Baylor University in Waco, TX where he received his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1969. He continued his academic path at North Texas State University in the summer of 1970, then again on to Baylor University earning a Master of Arts Degree in History, with a minor in Journalism in 1974. Gilbert's devotion to education led him to teaching history, as well as an exceptional pedigree as head baseball coach at Jefferson Moore High School from 1969-1980. During this time, he was able to combine his unparalleled skills in baseball with his love for history as a teacher, coach, and mentor to so many young students, and players. He left a lasting impression that followed him throughout his life where "Coach" would be a name he answered to with everlasting fulfillment, and pride.

After spending 13 years in commercial insurance, Gilbert furthered his professional career in education at McLennan Community College. He began his tenure there with the Upward Bound Program in 1994, then went on to become a full-time Professor of US History and Government in 1996, ultimately leading to his role as Division Chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2005 until his retirement in January 2024. Fueled by his love for education, Gilbert leaves behind a legacy that has deeply impacted the lives of his family, friends, students, players, clients, colleagues, as well as multitudes of others privileged to have known him.

He is survived by his daughters Esther Montemayor, Ellen (Montemayor) Sargent, son-in-law Dr. Matthew Sargent, two grandchildren, sisters Mary L. Montemayor, Julia Ramon, Lidia Montemayor, brother Johnny Joe Montemayor, sister-in-law Brenda Montemayor, as well as beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
