Elmo W. Haferkamp, Sr.March 7, 1927 – December 7, 2008 Elmo William Haferkamp, Sr. passed away at a local hospital Sunday evening. Funeral services will be 2 pm Wednesday at the funeral home with Reverend Paul Fiske officiating. Interment and Military Honors will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Elmo was born March 7, 1927 in Riesel to Henry W. and Frieda (Holle) Haferkamp. In 1945 he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he was awarded a Sharpshooter and a World War II Victory Medal. On May 31, 1949 Elmo married the love of his life, Georgia Sykora. He worked for the VA Hospital for 38 years as a Nursing Assistant until his retirement on April 25, 1986. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elwood Haferkamp and Vernon Haferkamp; and two sisters, Alberta Wolske and Esther Wolske. Survivors include his loving wife, Georgia of 59 years of Waco; his son, Elmo W. Haferkamp, Jr. and wife Josephine of Hewitt; granddaughter, Allison McCulloch and husband Fred of College Station; grandson, Andrew Haferkamp of Hewitt; sister, Linda Fenske of Cypress and brother W. B. Haferkamp of Hewitt. Pallbearers will be Andrew Haferkamp, Fred McCulloch, Darrell Lehde, John Kelbly, Eldon Swenson, Ray Mize and Juan Picasso. The family is extremely grateful to Ruby Robinson, Rebecca Hanks, Victoria Miller, the Providence Health Center Staff and the Providence Hospice Staff for their never ending love and care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church.
