Obituary

Doris Jean Smith was born on April 27, 1930, and was born and raised in Teague, Texas. Her early years were marked by humble and often meager circumstances, including times when the family lived in a pop-up trailer. As a young girl, she helped care for her sister, Nancy, while her mother and father worked in the cotton fields. From those beginnings, she developed the quiet strength, compassion, and servant's heart that would define her life.

She lived a life marked by devotion to family, quiet strength, faithful partnership, and steady love. She was also remarkably tough, surviving four bouts of cancer, two knee replacements, one shoulder replacement, and other physical challenges that she overcame with resilience and determination.

She was the beloved wife of John Wayne Shelton, with whom she shared 76 years of marriage. Doris and John first knew one another while attending La Vega High School in Bellmead, near Waco, Texas. Their courtship began in late 1946, and they were married on September 3, 1949. From that beginning, they created a life together that carried them from Texas to Illinois and through 76 years of work, faith, friendship, and family life. Over the course of those years, Doris lived in twenty-two separate places, including London, England, and Oslo, Norway. By her husband's own account, Doris was the central and enduring part of his life.

In their early married years, Doris accompanied John to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where he pursued graduate studies. During that time, she worked in several positions and brought both determination and grace to the practical demands of young married life. Wherever they lived, she helped create a home marked by steadiness, resilience, and care for others.

Doris was known for her loyalty, her capability, and her willingness to serve others. She was a supportive partner through the many moves, career changes, and challenges of family life. She was also active in church life and shared with her husband a lasting commitment to her community and to her Lord Jesus Christ.

She had a true servant's heart. Everywhere she lived, she found individuals and families to help, often in practical and personal ways. Throughout her life, Doris helped by teaching, guiding, and mentoring others in need. She loved these people and families as if they were her own family. Looking back over her life, she served the Lord through her faithful service to others in need.

Doris was preceded in death by her mother, Orandus Smith, and her father, Virgil Smith.

More than anything, Doris will be remembered for the life she shared with her family and for the compassion she showed to so many beyond it. She was deeply loved and will be remembered with gratitude for her warmth, her constancy, and the love she gave so faithfully over the years.

She is survived by her husband, John Wayne Shelton; her two children, Kyle Shelton, and Maura Shelton; her sister, Nancy Harlan; her four grandchildren, Leslie Fong, Maura Shelton, Ren Riot, and Sara Johnson; and her great-grandchild, Harvey Elliott Johnson.
