Donald Allen MontgomeryApril 20, 1929 ~ February 10, 2010 Donald Allen Montgomery passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 following a courageous 19-month battle against complications resulting from muscular dystrophy and pneumonia. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 15, at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 6623 S. IH 35, Waco, Texas. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 14, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors, 4400 West Waco Drive in Waco. Don was born on April 20, 1929 in Athens, Texas to Clinton Hulbert and Lena Sisk Montgomery. The family moved to Waco when Don was 10 years old and Don lived there until he graduated from Waco High School in 1947. Don was a member of the Waco Tigers 1945 State Co-Championship football team. Following high school, he spent four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. His foreign duty was in Japan. After his discharge from the Navy, Don enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin. Three years later, in 1956, he received his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Accounting and continued to be an avid Longhorn fan. On June 24, 1952, Don married Celia Ann McClellan. They had one son, Paul Greer Montgomery. Celia preceded him in death on April 22, 1997. On September 10, 1956, Don began his career at Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas. Alter almost 33 years of service, he retired from Shell in July 1989. In 2000, Don purchased his retirement home in Kerrville, Texas and has spent most of his time there since then. In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Phila Vestal, five nephews, one niece, and one great niece. He is survived by his son, Paul Montgomery of Richmond, Texas, two brothers, Clinton Montgomery of Waco and Grady Montgomery of Gonzales, two sisters, Betty Huff of Houston and Martha Dunphy of Shreveport, Louisiana, and by several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his long-time close friend and companion, Frances Rabbe, of Kerrville. Don's smile, his courage, his positive attitude, and his determination throughout his illness have become legendary to those who battled it with him. He will always be much-loved and sorely missed.
