David "Papa" BrownMay 23, 1934 ~ June 17, 2010 David "Papa" Brown, 76, broke camp and headed out on that final trail ride to be with the lord on Thursday, June 17, 2010. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 21, 2010 in the pasture at the Brown's home at 262 South 5th Street, Axtell, Texas with Pastors Jim Cox and Kerry Groce officiating. Burial will follow at Axtell Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors. David was born May 23, 1934 in Waco, Texas to Frank and Nora (Lowe) Brown. He married Marty Tanksley on December 20, 1968 in Waco, Texas. David was a horse shoer all his life and worked and retired from the City of Bellmead. He was an annual fixture at the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo with his Stage Coach, carrying in the dignitaries and giving rides for special needs children. He was always a crowd favorite at the local parades. He always won over the crowd at the chuck wagon cookouts with his delicious provisions. Papa was also an ordained minister serving his God by conducting many cowboy weddings. He was a veteran of the Navy. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend to so very many. Papa was preceded in death by his parents; son, Charlie Brown Jr., sister, Ruby Herring; and brother, Travis Brown. Even though Papa has ridden ahead of the herd he will continue to look back after his loving wife of 41 years, Marty Brown; son, James "Jamie" Sexton and wife, Midge; grandchildren, J. Jordan and Jeren Sexton; sister, Helen Brooks and husband, Collin; brothers, John Brown and wife, Janet, Bobby Brown and wife, Diane, Frankie Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Pallbearers will be Eric Alejo, John Embry, Parnell McNamara, Matt Nehring, Michael Joe Olson, and Ben Rendek. Honorary pallbearers are Enri Alejo, Hank Campbell, Mike Cook, Roy Hyde, Norman Lassetter, Alton Thornton, Bill Waller and Mike Watson. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Providence Hospice and Providence Hospital for the care and love given to Papa. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 4830 Lakewood Drive, Suite 2, Waco, Texas, 76710 or the charity of your choice.
