Carol Adelaide Smith died June 10, 2015 at Hillcrest Baylor Scott & White Hospital. She had been a resident of the Ridgecrest Retirement and Healthcare Community for fourteen years.Carol was born September 3, 1922, the daughter of Van Vechten and Ethel Terrell Munger in Brooklyn, New York.She graduated from Garden City High School in 1940 and was the valedictorian of her class. She graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke college with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History in 1944, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.Carol met Lowell while in college in Massachusetts and, after he returned from World War II service in the South Pacific, they were married June 21, 1947, in East Williston, New York. They lived in Terre Haute, Indiana, Yonkers, New York, Louisville, Kentucky, Worthington and Mentor, Ohio, and finally moved to Waco, Texas in 1981.Carol was a homemaker all of her married life. She enjoyed meal planning and having friends and family visit. Carol and Lowell were avid square dancers for many years enjoying the exercise and camaraderie. She sewed beautifully, making square dance outfits, costumes, jewelry and shoe bags for her family and friends. Carol loved to travel; she toured all 50 states and five continents.She served her various communities as a volunteer and made many friends along the way. She combined her love of art and children as a volunteer Docent at the Art Center in Waco for 15 years. Carol was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Waco, serving in sanctuary care and several circles. She was a member of the Odell Dudley Sunday School class.Carol continued making friends at Ridgecrest as she became a regular Domino player and attended all the music programs.She was preceded in death by one sister, Priscilla, her parents, and husband, Lowell. Carol is survived by her children Nancy and husband Terry Oertli of Brenham, Texas, Barry and wife Gail Smith of League City, Texas, and Brian and wife Judy Smith of Ocala, Florida; her grandchildren Carol Purvis and fiance Rob Wilson, Jonathan Purvis and wife Felicia, Dave Purvis and wife Jessica, Brant Oertli and wife Jennifer, and Doug Smith; her beloved great grandchildren Lacy, Zachary, Keegan, Cadence, Colin, and Camree. Her grandsons will serve as pall bearers.Visitation for Carol Smith will be held Friday, June 12, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and the funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015. Both will be at the Connally-Compton Funeral Home 4400 West Waco Dr. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to HOTPACS, 2001 N.
