Obituary

Antonio CastroAntonio Castro, 86, longtime Waco resident, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple after a lengthy illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 30, 2004 with the Rev. Lawrence Soler as Celebrant, with burial following in Waco Memorial Park. Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 29 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors.Mr. Castro was born in Rockdale to José Angel and Catarina Guevera Castro. He attended high school in Rosebud. He served in the Civil Conservation Corps during the Depression, enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served in a tank battalion and was wounded at the Battle of Bastogne in 1944. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. Mr. Castro was active in local community and youth activities. He and his brother Angel were instrumental in the financing of the construction of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He served as a Little League coach and administrator, was one of the founding members of Waco Missions, and served as treasurer for Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana de Jornaleros. In 1987 he retired from the Veterans Administration hospital in Waco where he was assistant laundry manager.Preceding Mr. Castro in death were his parents; infant sister, Dora; sister, Manuela Veracruz; and brothers, Angel, Guadalupe, and Frank.He is survived by his wife, Maria Emma of Waco; son, Tony Castro and wife Renee LaSalle of Beverly Hills, Calif.; daughter, Dora Rodriguez and husband Pat of Austin; brother, Isaac Martinez of Rosebud; three sisters, Pauline Salas, Josephine Bravo and Consuelo Maldonado of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Robert Rodriguez of Houston, Angela Rodriguez of Dallas and Trey and Ryan LaSalle-Castro of Beverly Hills, Calif.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
